The fonds consists of records generated by the UBC Library and its branches and divisions, and includes correspondence (both internal and external), reports, minutes, budgets and other financial records, architectural plans and drawings, published materials, scrapbooks, and photographs. The records are arranged in sous-fonds based on branches and divisions represented by the records. They are the Librarian's Office, Acquisition Division, Data Library, Extension Library, Gifts and Exchanges Division, Reference Division, Sedgewick Library, Special Collections Division, and Woodward Library. Also included are some records from the library of McGill University College of B.C., pre-dating the establishment of UBC and its Library.

Malcolm Lowry was born in 1909 in Birkenhead, England. By the age of 30, when he had arrived in British Columbia, he had received a B.A. in English from Cambridge University, published a novel and travelled to the United States and Mexico. By this time he had begun work on his major novel Under the Volcano. In 1940 he married Margerie Bonner. For the next fifteen years he resided primarily in Dollarton, North Vancouver and travelled abroad before returning to England. His final home was in Susse...
